2021, huh?

So it's finally 2021. That hell year is over. It went really strangely fast and I'm not exactly sure what happened but here we are.
As an update on what I've been doing --
- I've been working on setting up my business and digitizing videos, I did four jobs last year and I'm working on a fifth
- I FINALLY started posting my transcription of Harley MS 682, you can see it here -> https://sites.google.com/site/charlesdukeoforleans/harley-682
- I'm finally starting to look for a car. Which means I have to curtail my video game spending big time. But it'll be worth it.
Anyway so far this year I've watched two movies, True Stories and Errementari. The second is a Basque production based on the folktale of the blacksmith and the devil. Definitely recommend it if you're into horror, demons/Faust-like stories, and unlikely allies. True Stories was given to me by a friend last year and I finally got around to watching it, it's a joyous look at an eccentric fictional town narrated by David Byrne. Also highly recommended, it's surprisingly positive and strangely almost comforting.
I'm going to try to post here more often, and I want to start writing more reviews. Stuff that's relevant to history/literature/language I'll also review over on my other blog, https://boolean-illogic.blogspot.com/

Date: 2021-02-06 10:27 pm (UTC)Congratulations on the job and also on the transcription! It's so awesome and generous of you to share your work with the world! You know, I recently thought of you (well, you and Charles D'Orleans!) because I had no internet for over a month, and one of the things I did to amuse myself was poke at some of my old WIPs, including a Henry V one, and one I started after I first read "In a dark wood wandering". Who knows? I might finish them some time this decade, go me!
And oh, both those movies sound very cool. David Byrne can do no wrong in my eyes, so I'll definitely have to seek out that one! And is "Errementari" too scary? I am very bad with horror, but at the same time, I am very intrigued by this (I'm part Basque and it's a strong cultural pull for me, to put it mildly, so a Basque take on this story would be interesting) and it sounds very good! The original story isn't as scary as much as it's unsettling, as I remember it from childhood days, but just in case, I thought I'd ask you about it!
Good luck with car hunting and everything else! I hope you're staying safe and healthy, and I hope to see more of you here on DW this year! *hugs*

Date: 2021-03-02 08:55 am (UTC)It's good to see you on again, I wondered where you were! I understand about internet problems, one year a lightning strike blasted the internet receiver at our house apart so I didn't have internet at home other than my phone for weeks. That was a fun time at college, trying to do homework like that! I hope everything's working now. And awww I'm honored you thought of me and Charles! I saw you took down some of your fics on Ao3 and was sad, I liked them a lot. I have some fics about Charles in the works too, I need to work on them soon.
David Byrne is the BEST. I'm sure you've seen Stop Making Sense? It's a spiritual experience I tell you. True Stories is great, you'll love it, it's a very wholesome film.
I didn't know you were part Basque! That's so cool! When I was a kid I used to visit a part of Arizona (and accidentally ended up living there for like a month bc my dad was recovering from an injury and couldn't travel) that was settled by Basque farmers, Concho (which is from the Basque word for valley iirc). Anyway sorry for the digression.
It depends on what you find scary. There are some gruesome scenes (though not a lot of gore) that establish the Blacksmith as a vicious man buy you can always do what I do and look away until it sounds safe to look. There are also a couple scenes involving the main character, a young orphaned girl, being on the receiving end of bullying and abuse (I don't want to spoil anything but it ends up okay for her in the end and it's commentary on how people can be isolated and hurt by other people's unfair prejudices and fears). Plus there are scenes involving demons and hell so that might be a little unsettling. Idk if there's anything else to warn about. I can write down some time codes of more intense scenes you might want to skip. It does end on a positive note about compassion and forgiveness so it's worth a watch. I'm not sure it's horror so much as maybe fantasy? And it is nice to see the Basque culture and language represented!
Anyway it's nice to see you again! I'll try to be more. Hope you're staying safe too! My parents just got their vaccines last week since they're older, I haven't gotten mine yet, but I'm doing my best to stay safe.

Date: 2021-03-02 03:48 pm (UTC)Ohh, yessss! "Stop making sense" is awesome! I haven't watched it in years, but guess what, now I want to! Haha! <3
It's so cool that you ended up living in an area with Basque people (even if accidentally, heh!) The Basque diaspora is quite big in many countries in America--so big, that many Basque people call it "the eight province", haha! <3 And no problem about digressions, I love talking about this kind of stuff, it's fascinating, and Basque culture is the coolest, I love the music and the folklore/legends, which is why I was very interested in what you wrote about this movie. I will try to fortify and check it out ;) Heh, "look away until it sounds safe to look" is what I do too--I'm sooo bad with horror! XD
And yay for vaccines! My parents are on the waiting list, but hopefully they will get theirs soon too! Fingers crossed! Take care!
